Angola, 1975: the renowned Polish war journalist Ryszard Kapuściński finds himself right in the midst of war-related events shortly before Angola’s declaration of independence. The local warring factions, supported by the USA or by the USSR and Cuba, are battling fiercely to gain dominance over the country. While the Portuguese are hastily packing their possessions to leave the country as quickly as possible, reporter Kapuściński plans to make his way to the focal point of the war in the south of the country but is repeatedly denied authorisation to travel in the region. As the Angolan capital of Luanda is evacuated, Kapuściński sends daily news to the Polish press agency. When he is finally able to undertake the perilous journey southwards to the front, Ryszard Kapuściński confronts a new problem: his contact with the civilians and the combatants has given the story a face, and Kapuściński now begins to question the role of the “passive, objective” war reporter.
“Another Day of Life” draws various strands of re-enacted live-action footage together with detailed animated sequences, archival footage and current interviews to form a striking portrayal of a part of history that still has an impact on Angola today. In March 2018, “Another Day of Life” won Cartoon Movie’s Producer of the Year Award. The film celebrated its world premiere a few months later with a special screening in Cannes. (dm)
