The lines between autobiography, social studies, the visual arts and the art of film have begun to blur. Mythical scenery – often inspired by folk art – is now depicted in a bold, idiosyncratic style. In addition, the need to address social issues has resulted in the use of documentary methods and styles, with today’s female directors wittily presenting their criticism of social preconceptions.
