Darkness covers New York: a mysterious man with the “disfigured” face is terrorising the city. Coincidently, police officer Alex picks up his trail and gets badly hurt, which lands him in hospital. Now bed-stricken and immobile, his desperate attempts to keep track of the criminal are pretty much hopeless. Eleven-year-old Leo happens to be in the same hospital and entrusts a secret to his sister before treatment: he has the ability to leave his body at will and can fly and pass through walls like a phantom. Alex and Leo meet each other in the hospital. But Alex doesn’t know how to deal with children, and even less so when there is a case to crack. Nevertheless, he soon realises that there is something special about Leo… Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli thrilled cinema audiences with their last feature film “Une vie de Chat”, which garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film in 2012. They retain their delicate drawing style in this new production, affording their figures expressivity by means of subtle abstraction. Here, too, their colour scale is shaded for “Phantom Boy”, while using few, yet skilfully applied effects. Several well-known names lend their voice to the figures in “Phantom Boy”: Audrey Tautou, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Edouard Baer, Jackie Berroryer. (rg/as)
