Documentary combined with animation already proved to be a strong way of storytelling with inexhaustible creative possibilities. “Another Day of Life” uses two narration layers by com- bining animation with extracts of live action footage. Animation expresses the inner world of Ryszard Kapuściński as the makers consider it the ideal technique to represent a free mind while documentary complements the story by adding a reality layer. ‘We can distort shapes, stylize the appearance of items or characters. With 3D graphics and motion captured animation, the palette of storytelling tools is endless’ (directors state). The film is based on the non-fiction record of the three months stay of the Polish writer Ryszard Kapuściński in the Angola during the war in 1975. Kapuściński (1932 –2007) was a Polish war reporter, journalist, photographer, poet and writer.
Raul de la Fuente, responsible for the original idea of the film, met Kapuściński when he was fifteen years old and travelled to Ethiopia, Mozambique and Angola. Animation director Nenow graduated from the National Film School in Łódź. His film “Paths of Hate” brought him international recognition. Nenows presentation focuses on practical ways of controlling storytelling, working with actors and editing. He mixes practice and theory and presents a lot of visual materials. Thus Nenow unfolds how they succeeded in achieving their goal: to combine spectacular live action footage with animation in order to complement each other in showing the raw reality of war. (evd)
