Emilio is suffering from Alzheimer’s. His grasp of the present is increasingly tenuous and he frequently loses himself in his past. His son puts him in an old people’s home, where Emilio meets his next-door neighbour Miguel, who is already familiar with the place and its residents, and helps Emilio settle into a new everyday routine. While Miguel turns other residents› mental deficiencies to his personal advantage, it slowly dawns on Emilio that he himself has Alzheimer’s disease. His daily contact with mentally deranged senile residents forces him to think about his own future and about how the disease is dealt with. Whether two-faced Miguel will support Emilio or also profit from his forgetfulness keeps us in suspense until the end of the film. Deep affection and wry humour characterize «Wrinkles», Ignacio Ferrera’s unusual and marvellous film about growing old. Astute dialogues and original personages pay tribute to an age group that is obviously a sly dog and by now makes up a large part of our population. But senior citizens are very rarely protagonists in animation films. That is why “Wrinkles” is part of this year’s “Humanité Animée” special programme, because Fantoche would like to celebrate human beings in all their humanity and with all the challenges. This Spanish production is based on the eponymous comic by Paco Roca, which won Spain’s National Comic Award in 2008, while the adaptation itself carried off two Goya Awards in one fell swoop this year: the Best Animated Film Award, and the Best Screenplay Adaptation Award.
