Far beyond the borders of gloomy housing estates, playgrounds and everyday stereotypes, there is a world of fantasy, where the ravens walk like men, a metal machine wants to rule the world and building cranes look like robots. In this world nine year old Riki embarks on a journey to save his mother’s heart and make her happy again. This first Slovak animated feature film in 33 years is a fantasy fairy-tale set in two different worlds which are connected through the fantasy of main character Riki. The dark and slightly hostile ‘real world’ is aesthetically based on post communist Eastern Europe and the ‘world of fantasy’ represents the inner world of Riki. Both worlds change by various means and reasons. The characters are based on old photographs from the period between 1920 and 1950. Some unknown persons in these photos trigger the director’s imagination, he provides them with their own personal stories and backgrounds. Combining these characters in collage style with the given sets a new universe is created. Using 2D paper cut out, based on the photographs with all their blurs and other imperfections no compromises are made to the original design. By putting the characters in a 3D environment cinematic possibilities arise. “The backgrounds are also created as 2D collages but will be used as 3D environments when needed because of the situation taking place.”
