“Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie” is a futuristic sci-fi spectacle: Thanks to the use of complex cybernetics, it is possible to prolong human life and diminish suffering in 2027. Humankind is interconnected with a system of so-called “Ghosts” that know the mind and personality of each individual. The greatest enemies of civilisation are cyber terrorists that can implant themselves into bodies and memories. One year after the brutal global war, Newport City is shaken by a terrorist attack: Japan’s Prime Minister is assassinated by a bomb. But there is no trace of the perpetrators of these attacks. Set after the events in the “Ghost in the Shell: Arise” series, it is now up to Section 9, led by Major Matoko Kusanagi, to get to the bottom of the mysterious incidents. When a Ghost infected with a virus spreads throughout the system, it becomes clear that it might be jointly responsible for the attacks. As Major Kusanagi and her elite team attempt to track the virus back to its origin, they discover corrupt machinations within the government. Directed by Kazuya Nomura, the film was produced by the renowned Studio Production I.G, already responsible for the iconic first “Ghost in the Shell” anime. Based on the manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow, “Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie” is yet another action-packed edition of the “Ghost in the Shell” series.
