Where Is Anne Frank

Where Is Anne Frank

Anne Frank writes to her imaginary friend Kitty in her world-famous diary during the Second World War. Seventy-five years later, 13-year-old Kitty miraculously comes to life and suddenly finds herself in present-day Amsterdam. She sets out to find her friend Anne, but doesn’t get far, because no one really takes her seriously. Because she soon discovers that Anne no longer seems to be in Amsterdam, Kitty sets out to find out the fate of Anne Frank. Peter, a pickpocket who falls in love with Kitty, helps her in this seemingly hopeless search. Through him, she learns about the plight of migrants waiting for deportation. The more Kitty learns about the fate of Anne Frank and her family, the more she feels the need to help the migrants in one way or another.

Anyone who has visited Amsterdam knows that there is no getting around Anne Frank: there is the Anne Frank School, the Anne Frank Bridge, the Anne Frank Theatre. But who was Anne Frank actually, and what does her name stand for? Ari Folman’s “Where Is Anne Frank” is a film definitely worth seeing not only because of its original way of telling the story of the well-known diary, its author and especially the message it contains, but also because of linking the past with the present. A film that honours the memory of Anne Frank and her message.

“Where Is Anne Frank” celebrated its premiere in Cannes in 2021, and Fantoche is screening the film in collaboration with Zurich’s Yesh! Film Festival, which provides a wide-ranging education programme. (Corinna Haag)
