The Oddsockeaters

Lichozrouti

Even though the sockeaters are invisible to the human eye, they do indeed live among us! They are responsible for socks that go missing when we only have one left from a pair in the drawer or linen cupboard – the odd sock, something we presumably all know far too well. When Hugo the sockeater suddenly loses his grandfather, he has to fend entirely for himself. He sets out in search of relatives, though totally unaware of their existence. But Hugo is an oddball, among his own kind as well as in the midst of gigantic human beings, constantly overstepping the fragile boundary between the two worlds. Nevertheless, it is precisely these missteps that help him find a family, friends and a new home in the end.
The adventures of the small sockeaters are set in the centre of Prague, unnoticed by its harried inhabitants. However, Hugo is being trailed by a mad professor, one of the few humans able to see the sockeaters and totally obsessed with the idea of finding out the truth about these creatures. And, as if that were not enough, Hugo gets caught up in a feud between two opposing sock mafiosos whose very existence depends on sock thievery. One group adheres to the unwritten rule of “only stealing one sock” and is led by Hugo’s uncle. He teaches Hugo that greed is fatal, and that family and friends are the most important thing in life.
The story of the sockeaters began with a popular series of children’s books written by Pavel Šruts and illustrated by (animation) artist Galina Miklínová. Miklínová herself brought the heroes to life on the big screen, using computer graphics to lend each character its textural and individual personality. A venturous children’s story is thus transformed into a genuine action film for the entire family. (az)
