Signe Baumane

Signe Baumane (*1964, Latvia) graduated with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Moscow University in 1989 and started working as an animator at Dauka Animation Studio the same year. In 1995 she moved to New York to work for Bill Plympton. Her films often deal with subjects that are difficult to talk about: sex, pregnancy, bodily functions, depression, and the individual vs. society.
Signe is a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fellow in Film for New York Foundation for the Arts. Her work comprises 16 short films that have been screened internationally in Festivals and a series called “Teat Beat of Sex”. In 2014, she received awards from the ANIMATOR Festival in Poland and the Riga International Film Festival 2ANNAS in Latvia for her first feature film “Rocks in my Pockets” (2013). The release of her second feature film “My Love Affair with Marriage” is scheduled for next year.
